How-To Guide

How to Build a Hugelkultur Base in a Raised Bed

Hugelkultur uses buried wood as a spongey core under compost-rich soil — a living reservoir, not a gravel drain.

Now

Start with an open bottom and nest wood so voids do not cave.

Why

Mounds of wood plus organics plus soil hold moisture as wood decays.

Next

Cap with compost-rich mix, water in, expect settling.

Kit

  • Untreated logs/branches (avoid allelopathic or toxic woods)
  • Twigs and leaves to nest voids
  • Compost-rich growing mix for the cap
  • Mulch
  • Open-bottom bed frame

Do this

  1. Start with an open bottom

Set the bed where roots and water can connect to native ground. Hugelkultur over solid hardpan still needs thoughtful design.

  2. Nest twigs into voids

Lay larger wood, then stuff twigs/leaves so giant air pockets do not collapse into caves.

  3. Cap with compost-rich mix

Top with several inches of compost/soil so seeds and transplants have a finished medium.

  4. Expect settling

Water thoroughly after building. Wood sinks over months — plan to top up soil.

  5. Mulch the surface

Mulch reduces evaporation while the woody core slowly becomes a moisture buffer.
