How to Trellis and Harvest Cucumbers in San Diego

   Tie vines as they run

   Direct vining cucumbers onto a cage, trellis, fence, or stake. Even a 3-ft tomato cage helps; if you cannot trellis, use a bush or compact variety.

   First flowers are male

   The first 10–20 flowers are male; fruit needs bees or a brush, and a female bloom has a tiny pickle behind it (males drop). Ordinary cucumbers need insect pollination — pollen is sticky, so wind does not do it.

   Pick every 1–2 days

   Pick every 1–2 days, before the fruit turns yellow, and follow the packet. UC IPM slicers run 8–10 in and picklers about 3 in; other Master Gardeners print slicers at 6–8, 6–7, or 6–9 in and picklers from 2–6 in.

   Snap or cut the stem

   Twist if the stem snaps clean; cut if it fights. Don’t rip the vine.

   Drip, even moisture, leaves dry

   Water to about a 1-ft depth with drip, not overhead spray on foliage or fruit. Dry or uneven water makes small or deformed fruit; too much can split it.

   Bitter? Peel skin + stem end

   Taste a sliver of the stem end first, then peel the skin and stem end if it is bitter, and do not store next to bananas, apples, or melons. Printed causes include heat, drought, overwater, poor fertility, late harvest, cool temps, and swings over 20°F; extra irrigation is not a proven cure.

7. 7

   Fridge 45–55°F. Replant next spring only

   Store at 45–55°F for a short time; do not sow again in late August. Next year, Lazaneo’s windows are coastal Mid Mar–Jul and inland Apr–Jul, in warm soil.
